Over this past weekend, I had the awesome opportunity to attend a national conference for student tour guides and we left with so many great ideas that you just might see on your next visit to Transy!
I attended the first ever student conference hosted by the Collegiate Information and Visitor Services Association (CIVSA), which was held at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. The whole town was gorgeous. Even better, the conference was cause for a super fun road trip with Transy’s other lead Admissions Ambassadors — my friends Emmie and Abby — and our wonderful supervisors Kari and Lora (who, if you’ve visited campus already, you’ve probably met!).
The entire weekend was so much fun and we spent a lot of time talking about what we love about our visit program, as well as new ideas for the rest of this school year!
Sure, the behind-the-scenes of the admissions process may not be fascinating to you. I know all I cared about when I was a senior in high school was whether I was accepted and what kind of scholarship I could get. So I’ll skip some details.
Just know that the people you meet on every college visit are so, so passionate about the institution they work for and the students they meet everyday. It was amazing to be surrounded by so many people who were so excited about campus tours!
And thank goodness for all of you who still have more tours to take, there was a lot of focus during the conference about how to make tours better experiences for visitors. If you’ve started taking campus tours already, I hope you’ve had some that were amazing and made you want to stay, but you might have also encountered tours that make you start counting down the minutes until you can go back home. I get it. When the tour guide isn’t excited and is just spitting facts and figures at you, who wouldn’t want to turn around and head back to the car?
So yeah, that puts some pressure on us tour guides. I mean, picking where you’re going to go to college is probably the biggest decision you’ve made in your life so far! But it’s such an amazing opportunity to get to play a part in your decision. I love showing you my favorite spots on tour, answering your questions on overnight visits, and then getting to see familiar faces on Move-In Day in the fall.
Of course, I do want to selfishly point out that the conference this weekend did make me so proud of all the great things Transy is already doing. But of course, we can always get better. And we will.
So schedule your visit (or at least click the link to see our adorable picture on the webpage!) and bring whatever questions you want to ask your counselor, a professor, or current students — your tour is all about you!
